My sister bought, on my advice, a GeForce 260 and a Corsair 520W PSU to upgrade her pretty basic HP desktop (model hp t3529.uk) recently.

The PSU doesn't seem to work. The following seems to be the case:
Old Computer -> Works
Old Computer - Old PSU + New PSU -> Doesn't Work

She bought it from ebuyer. When she got a replacement, the above was also true. Has she just got unlucky, or should she try something else? I would have thought that Corsair would have been fine.

Thanks.

Different length power connector on the MB? The long 2 row one?

I think the socket from my Coolermaster PSU is overhangs the pins on the MB by one row...

I thought the Corsair 520W PSU would be fine... Mine lasted 5 months..

Assuming she's done the obvious checks (any switch on the back of the new PSU is set to 'on' or 240v, aux power cables plugged in, etc.), which she probably has if she's happy swapping PSUs, might just be time to give up and get a refund.

Could try jump-starting it to see if it will fire up by itself: http://www.clunk.org.uk/forums/guides/3 ... t-psu.html
And if it does make sure it meets the right ATX standards for the mainboard. Oh, don't leave it running like this for too long.

Sorry, I will follow my brother's advice and post on here myself.
Thanks for the replies

The problem isn't as simple at the new PSU simply not working. Basically the first PSU they sent me wouldn't turn on after just being turned off and would only turn on after being disconnected from the power for a while. When you pressed the on button the blue light would come on briefly but the fans and nothing else on the motherboard would start up, meaning that, I presume, some power was coming through but something else was up.
Anyway, after a while the computer wouldn't start however long you left it turned off for.
Yet when I replaced my orginal PSU the computer functioned normally.
I sent the unit back and was sent a replacement. However the second unit had exactly the same problem (ie. wouldn't turn on after being turned off for a while). So I've sent this one back for a refund.

Hopefully they were both just from a faulty batch but as the same thing happened to both PSUs I'm concerned that there's some sort of incompatibilty issue with the corsair PSU and my computer. Either that or whether if my new graphics card is faulty (the reason I needed a new PSU was to upgrade the graphics) it could do something odd like this to the PSU when I installed it.

I guess my question then is whether anyone knows of any incompatibilty issues, or whether it sounds like I've just been unlucky with a duff batch and should simply try getting the same or similar PSU from elsewhere.

My computer is a hp t3529.uk
The PSUs were Corsair 520w
The new Graphics card is a GeForce GTX 260

Thanks!

Time-wasting is the lifeblood of graduate-level academia.

Somebody else (http://forums.techarena.in/hardware-per ... 149146.htm) seemed to have a similar-sounding problem with a Corsair PSU and a machine with the same mainboard as yours (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docu ... 37&lang=en), and it was mentioned it didn't like older mainboards much, so I'd suggest getting a different make of PSU.

Can't give any reliable recommendations - last time I looked Enermax and Seasonic were well regarded, but that was several years ago now.

I have a Corsair 620W which has been going for almost three years now. All I could guess is that there's a conflict somewhere between the new PSU and the older PC, but the Corsair HX PSUs were made in 2006, and apparently your PC was made in 2005. It's not that much of a difference. Maybe the problem is just with that motherboard?

Anyway, here's a list of modular PSUs. Anything from Antec, Coolermaster, Tagan, OCZ (maybe), Zalman or indeed Enermax should be alright. I'd read some reviews first though.

Ok, thanks Colther and Jaffa_cake killer. You think just getting a different make of PSU will be alright then, or is it likely my motherboard is going to be a problem with those too?
Thanks for the advice!

Robert Trollslayer: Timewasting eh? and there I was thinking he was busy with SCIENCE. Can't be too ashamed of him though, I believe time wasting runs in the family.

Eddie: Hmm, I might have his intelligence and wit, but unfortunetly I also have his looks.

Is it because of your poor acting skillz? Because you told us you were like Gary Oldman merged with Orson Welles on cocain.
